IN REFLECTING ON MY JOURNEY as an artist and educator, I’m reminded of how each role I’ve embraced has deepened my creative expression and broadened my impact. For many years, I was a Drama Instructor with St. Louis Public Schools, where I had the honor of introducing students to the world of theater and nurturing their unique talents. In my final years teaching, as students’ ability to commit to after-school programs waned, I pivoted toward videography, adapting my approach to keep creativity alive and accessible. Embracing Final Cut Pro, I discovered new ways to capture and tell stories, not just for my students but also for myself. Since retiring, my expertise in video editing has grown, leading to the selection of two of my films for showcases in St. Louis—a validation of this evolving skill.
As an artist, I have been fortunate to wear many hats. In addition to my work as a videographer and educator, I am a published poet whose work explores themes of identity, resilience, and the beauty of everyday life. Performance has also been a vital aspect of my life. Acting since the first grade, I have performed with acclaimed local companies like the St. Louis Black Repertory Theatre, Shakespeare Festival-St. Louis, Unity Theatre Ensemble, and Hot City Theatre Company. These experiences have been richly rewarding, and I’m honored to have received multiple nominations for outstanding actress and supporting actress along the way.
My roles as an actor, director, and writer have always been interconnected, each one informing the others and deepening my understanding of storytelling. I have written, directed, and produced over fifty plays and musicals for audiences of all ages, continually inspired by the stories and perspectives of others. I believe theater has the power to reflect, challenge, and ultimately transform society, and it’s been my life’s work to make these moments of transformation accessible and engaging for all.
Art has also offered me a profound means of connection—to my students, my audiences, and my community. I find immense joy in cultivating the next generation’s appreciation for storytelling, whether through acting, directing, or, more recently, videography. The evolution of my career from drama instruction to film reflects my belief in staying adaptable and curious, traits I’ve always tried to instill in my students.
Ultimately, my artistic journey has been about bridging worlds—whether between traditional theater and modern film or between student and professional. With each project I undertake, I strive to convey the richness and complexity of human experience, celebrating our shared humanity in the process. As I continue to grow in my craft, I look forward to bringing more stories to life, honoring the voices of my community, and celebrating the beauty of storytelling in all its forms.
